June was a wild month across the league, with some of the league’s best going through wild rough patches, while some other teams seemed to have turned their season around. Let’s dive into this month’s updated power rankings.
#1 – Houston Astros (55-36) ⬆️10
Since the start of June, the Astros have been one of the best teams in baseball. They’ve gone from a fringe competitor in the AL West to having a top-three record in the entire league. On top of that, they put an absolute beatdown on the Dodgers over the weekend.
#2 – Los Angeles Dodgers (56-35) ⬆️2
The Dodgers continue to be one of the best teams in baseball, and will only be getting better over the next couple of weeks as they add Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell back into their rotation. When this team is healthy, there aren’t many teams that can compete with them.
#3 – Detroit Tigers (58-34) ⬇️2
You could definitely argue that the Tigers should be number one, but with how tight the top three teams are, I’m dropping them a couple of spots following a series loss to a bad Nationals team.
#4 – Chicago Cubs (54-36) ⬇️2
The Cubs’ offense continues to dominate this season, with Kyle Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki, and Michael Busch all having fantastic seasons. They’ll likely need some help in their bullpen to make a run at a World Series title, but even without that, this team is one of the best in the league.
#5 – Toronto Blue Jays (53-38) ⬆️11
The Blue Jays are looking like world beaters right now, winning their last nine in a row and taking the lead in the AL East. Watching them battle it out with the Yankees over the next couple of months is going to be fun.
#6 – Philadelphia Phillies (53-38) –
The Phillies continue to be a good team even while dealing with injuries. As per usual, their bullpen does raise some concerns, but this is a team that could easily compete for a World Series title. Oh, and Trea Turner not making the All-Star team is an absolute crime.
#7 – New York Mets (52-39) ⬇️2
Boy oh boy, the end of June was not kind to the Mets. In their defense, almost all of their starting pitchers are currently out with injuries, but at the same time, their offense has been abysmal. Hopefully, their series wins against the Brewers and Yankees will turn things around, and having Kodai Senga back soon should also help.
#8 – Milwaukee Brewers (51-40) –
The Brewers continue to find ways to win games and maintain their position in the Wild Card race. They’ll be a sneaky team to watch come playoffs, cause they can do some major damage on any given day.
#9 – New York Yankees (49-41) ⬇️6
The past week has been brutal for the Yankees, going from leading the division by three games to now being behind by three. This is still a solid team and will likely compete for the AL East crown, but they will need to find a way to improve their awful bullpen if they want to have a shot at winning in the playoffs.
#10 – Tampa Bay Rays (49-42) ⬆️5
The Rays have continued to improve as the season has progressed, now boasting the third-best offense in baseball. They still could use some help out of the bullpen, but this team should be playing baseball come October.
#11 – Seattle Mariners (48-42) ⬇️1
Man, if only Aaron Judge weren’t having a monster season, Cal Raleigh would probably be the favorite for AL MVP. The Mariners have been pretty consistent as of late, with big series wins against the Cubs and Rangers. They still need some of their guys to step up a bit more on offense, but the Mariners are in a great position to grab a Wild Card spot.
#12 – St. Louis Cardinals (48-43) –
The Cardinals find themselves in the exact same spot as they were a month ago. Good enough to justify standing pat and pushing for a Wild Card spot, but also mediocre and old enough that blowing it up and becoming sellers at the deadline wouldn’t be the worst idea. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, they’ll start to lean one way more than the other to make decisions easier for their GM.
#13 – San Francisco Giants (50-42) ⬇️4
The Giants’ pitching, led by Logan Webb, has been dominant lately, currently with the second-best ERA in baseball. They need to start getting some better production out of their offense, but after already making a big trade for Rafael Devers, there’s a chance they no longer have enough capital to pull off another big move.
#14 – San Diego Padres (48-42) ⬇️7
We might have to start coming to terms with the fact that the Padres are a mediocre team this year. After starting the season 14-3 in their first 17 games, they’ve since had a losing record in their last 72. They might be able to snag a Wild Card spot, but the Giants are right on their heels.
#15 – Boston Red Sox (47-45) ⬆️5
With Alex Bregman returning to the lineup soon, the Red Sox have a chance to make a run for a wild-card spot. Like the Reds, they’ll likely be looking to add some better arms to their bullpen and rotation over the next couple of weeks.
#16 – Cincinnati Reds (46-45) ⬇️3
They’re still in contention for a wild-card spot, but they’re going to need to pick things up in a hurry to claim one of those spots. I expect them to be in the market for some pitching help at the deadline.
#17 – Texas Rangers (44-47) ⬆️1
Man, Jacob deGrom just cannot catch a break. Poor guy seems destined to pitch at a Cy Young level for teams with no offense and struggling to make the playoffs.
#18 – Arizona Diamondbacks (45-46) ⬆️3
After picking things up a bit in early to mid June, the Diamondbacks have now lost nine of their last 11 games. They’re another team to keep an eye on as sellers as the deadline approaches.
#19 – Minnesota Twins (43-47) ⬇️5
AL Central teams falling off in the last month seems to be a trend. Byron Buxton is doing all that he can to lead this team to a playoff spot. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t look like it will be enough.
#20 – Los Angeles Angels (44-46) ⬆️2
The Angels need to blow things up at the deadline. They have far too many older players who could bring them value if sent to the right teams. If I were them, I would start looking forward to next year.
#21 – Kansas City Royals (44-48) ⬇️4
They still have a chance to salvage this season and grab a wild card spot, but they’re going to have to play outstanding in the second half of the season to make that happen.
#22 – Baltimore Orioles (40-49) ⬆️3
In a competitive AL East and AL wild card race, the Orioles are likely already out of the running this year. They’ll be interesting to watch at the deadline to see what they do with older players like Cedric Mullens.
#23 – Miami Marlins (41-48) ⬆️4
The Marlins have really picked things up recently, winning 10 of their last 13. I still don’t think they have what it takes to secure a Wild Card spot, but their recent success should be providing some hope for the future.
#24 – Cleveland Guardians (41-48) ⬇️11
What the heck has happened to the Guardians in the last month? They’ve gone from being the top AL wildcard seed to one of the worst teams in the league and just ended a ten-game losing streak, where they’ve scored only 15 runs. We might see the Guardians be major sellers at the deadline this year.
#25 – Atlanta Braves (39-50) ⬇️1
So much for the Braves getting better once they got Acuña back into the lineup. If anything, they’ve somehow gotten worse. This looks like a team that has given up on the season.
#26 – Pittsburgh Pirates (38-54) ⬆️2
Free Paul Skenes. Watching this guy absolutely dominate just to have his offense score zero runs is heartbreaking, reminds me of the Jacob deGrom Mets days. The Pirates are just awful to watch and have a long way to go before they’ll be competitive.
#27 – Washington Nationals (37-53) ⬇️4
Firing your GM a week before making the No. 1 overall pick in the draft is an interesting choice. But, to be fair, they’ve been rebuilding for a few years now, and are no better now than they were when they started.
#28 – Athletics (37-55) ⬇️2
The A’s have been absolutely terrible over the past couple of months and are the second-worst team at home this season. Fans have got to be excited by what they’ve seen from Jacob Wilson, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, and Nick Kurtz, but this team still has a lot of building to do.
#29 – Chicago White Sox (30-61) –
Well, at least this isn’t the worst season the White Sox have had this century. That’s something, right?
#30 – Colorado Rockies (21-70) –
Wow, what a shock, the Rockies still suck. At least Hunter Goodman has been a bright spot for them and provides some hope for building upon. Maybe they can find a suitor for German Marquez at the deadline to try and get some more prospects? But, that might be easier said than done.
